Rahul Dravid on AI and Technology in Cricket

Former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid on Saturday expressed his hopes for Artificial Intelligence to predict injuries to players in future. However, he also cautioned against an over-dependency on technology in cricket. He mentioned that predicting injuries to players is an area yet unexplored despite technological advancements.

“On the sporting field, one of the things that you are really hopeful about what AI might be able to do, is (to predict) injuries,” Dravid said at a panel discussion during AMFI Mutual Fund Summit in Mumbai on Saturday. He stated the inability to predict injuries despite advancements in sports medicine and science. He expressed hope that AI could help in this domain.

Finding the Balance Between Technology and Human Judgement

Dravid emphasized the importance of finding the right balance in the use of technology and human judgement. He acknowledged the benefits of technology in terms of strategy, tactics, player development, and enhancement. However, he cautioned against becoming a slave to it.

While technology has improved fairness in player selection, Dravid stated it cannot yet help in selecting teams for a variety of conditions that teams encounter at multiple venues. He revealed that data and analytics are increasingly being used in selection processes, especially in the IPL.

Too Much Dependence on Technology Isn't the Solution

Dravid cited the example of premier Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the ongoing Champions Trophy due to a back-related problem. He warned that too much reliance on technology won't help either. He quipped about the possibility of cloning players like Bumrah, but pointed out that it would take away the uniqueness of the sport.

The Role of Human Element in Sports

Dravid emphasized the importance of the human element and uniqueness in sports. He expressed his wish to keep a certain level of human involvement in sports and not to overly rely on AI.

He revealed that the Indian team management studied data from the past two years in the lead up to the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, it was the coaching staff which decided what data to share with the players and what to keep to themselves. He stressed on the importance of showing relevant data to the players that can help them improve.
