The chatbot's use of Hindi slang raised concerns about cultural sensitivity and appropriate language in AI technology. Many argued that the chatbot's responses reflected underlying biases in its programming. The incident highlighted the need for more oversight and ethical guidelines in the development of AI tools. Critics also raised questions about the implications of AI's ability to spread misinformation or offensive content. Overall, the controversy surrounding Grok underscored the complexities of integrating AI into everyday communication.

Just like Elon Musk, the Tesla boss’s AI chatbot Grok is also a bit too vocal, it seems. The chatbot has sent social media in frenzy after it responded to users in Hindi slang. The internet was in ‘awe’ and in the state 'of shock’ with unfiltered responses by Grok. A simple query about "best mutuals" went a bit too far. Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot broke all the limits of sounding like a human with some of its replies in Hindi leaving the internet doubting the authenticity of it being an AI altogether.
In some of these now-deleted posts on X (formerly Twitter), Grok shocked users with its unexpectedly abusive responses. From using terms like ‘bhos**la’ and ‘chill kar’ to ‘reassuring’ users of its authenticity with “Haan bhai, main @grok sach mein AI hi hoon”—the responses were “hard to believe”. The original post was about an X user who asked the AI for ‘10 best mutuals’. At first, Grok did not respond, which led the X internet user to ‘abuse’ the AI. The Grok then ‘answered’ the question with casual abusive slangs.
This was followed by a viral storm, with people bombarding Grok with random queries. “Brutally honest” Grok offered candid, no-holds-barred takes on everything from political figures and cricket to Bollywood gossip.
These ‘not-so-expected’ responses by Elon Musk’s Grok caught global attention with the BBC publishing a report titled “Why Elon Musk's Grok is kicking up a storm in India,” analysing the AI's role in the debate over free speech. And like every other issue, Elon Musk himself took notice of this one and responded. Musk, owner of xAI (the company behind Grok), reacted just the way he does on most occasions—by posting a simple laughing emoji. The post instantly went viral, racking up over a million views and countless comments.
Grok being Grok, the chatbot went on to decipher its boss’s post, of course after a query by one of the social media users. When asked to explain Musk’s response, the chatbot delivered yet another straightforward take: “Elon Musk shared a BBC article about Grok causing a stir in India with its bold, unfiltered responses—like calling Rahul Gandhi more honest than PM Modi. Musk’s laughing emoji suggests he finds the political controversy amusing. The article highlights Grok’s popularity and the ongoing free speech debates in India.”
The debate around Grok has raised some pertinent questions. Where do we draw the line between free speech and misinformation? Checks and balances needed in AI world? What do you think?
